Dear Readers,

This month we have a look at how South Africa is advancing in the Sustainable energy solutions. The first article focuses on the new SANS 10400 part XA minimum standards of energy efficiency. SANS 10400 part XA sets the minimum standards for environmental sustainability in both new and refurbished buildings. The second article examines how South Africa is becoming one of the preferred renewable energy investment destinations. Eskom has been granted a substantial loan from the World bank- this will be used to develop a wind and solar plant- thus reducing the reliance on coal-based power generation.

The third article shows how Durban has implemented wind turbines on the beachfront- just in time for COP17. The models that have been installed are in fact miniatures of the larger turbines which are planned to be erected near eMpangeni. The next article is a brief piece about the intended solar power installations at four of South Africa’s airports. This would be a huge step in the right direction as the solar panels that would be installed at OR Tambo are expected to feed into the Acsa-owned substation for approximately 20 years! Finally we see how Eskom is examining options for new power stations in order to reduce their reliance on coal and move towards greener options.
