The World Energy Council (WEC) has appointed South African National Energy Association (Sanea) chairperson Brian Statham as the chair-elect of the WEC Studies Committee, and as a member of the Officer’s Council.
Statham would assume office in September 2010, as the handover from the current chair of the Studies would take one year.
The Studies Committee oversees all studies undertaken by WEC, which plays an integral role in shaping thinking in the global energy community.
Sanea reported on Friday that the executive assembly had further agreed that the WEC Global Scenarios Study, which Statham led from 2004 to 2007, called the Energy Policy Scenarios to 2050, should be defined as one of only two flagship studies to be carried forward as the foundation for the future work of WEC.
Statham has some 33 years of experience in the power industry in South Africa.
Working for State-owned power producer Eskom for most of his career, he has been involved in construction, operations, research, production planning, investment planning and strategic planning, predominantly in the area of power generation.
Since being elected to the position of executive chairperson of Sanea in March 2007, he has devoted his time to the work of the association and of the WEC.
